Basin Development of Arabia
Summary
This regional hydrocarbon exploration study reveals new insights into the tectonic history and development of the hydrocarbon basins of the Arabian Plate. It covers all the petroleum basins southwest of the Zagros Collision zone, to Oman and Yemen in the south.
The study provides:
- A new tectonic framework
- Major re-analysis of the regional stratigraphy
- Regional stratigraphic horizons
- An extensive digital 'well tops' database
- Pre-Cambrian basement morphology
- ArcGIS digital format files and geotiff images
- An integrated gravity database
- Comprehensive bibliography
Data Sources
The primary geophysical and geological data sources are:
- Regional gravity and magnetic data
- Published papers, manuscripts and geological maps
- Satellite imagery
- An extensive well database of over 700 wells
Author
The geological author of the study is Dr Saad Jassim, who has over 30 years experience, with over 15 years spent with the Geological Survey of Iraq. He led the regional geological survey of the Iraq, resulting in new tectonic and geological maps of the country. He has over 20 publications including a book, and has a thorough knowledge of the regional hydrocarbon geology of North Africa and Arabia.
Scope of the Study
- Stratigraphic correlation of the region using formation tops from over 700 wells
- 2D and 3D analysis and interpretation of gravity and magnetic data, with geological control, including 22 2D modelled gravity sections
- Derivation of isopachs and horizon maps of the principal geological units
- Construction of Pre-Cambrian basement contour map
- Delineation of tectonic zones and terranes that have undergone similar evolution through time
- Insights into the basin structure and hydrocarbon potential of frontier areas, such as the Rub Al Khali
- Inversion of the gravity and magnetic data to confirm and refine the derived stratigraphic horizons in areas away from good well control
- Maturity analysis of the main source rocks
- In-depth geological understanding of the region from Dr Saad's Jassim own personal experience in Iraq and numerous published and unpublished reports and manuscripts.
