Interpretation
Our team of experienced geophysicists and geologists, can help you harness the benefits of gravity and magnetic data in your exploration programme.
Gravity and magnetic data help the geologist at all scales, from crustal tectonic analysis to assisting prospect identification.
The key geological information that can be gained from an analysis of gravity and magnetic data are:
- Basin outlines
- Basement morphology and terranes
- Structural elements
- intersedimentary features
- Depth-to-basement maps
- Locations of intrusives
Such information can also have key value in:
- Prioritising areas for seismic data purchase/acquisition
- Overcoming seismic interpretation ambiguities
- Correlating seismic faults
Advanced Processing
As the first stage in an interpretation work flow, a suite of G&M data derivatives are created to better visualise and understand the data. These are generated using GEOSOFT algorithms and programmes, and our own GETgrid software:
- Vertical and horizontal derivatives
- Reduction to the pole or equator
- Analytic signal
- Filtering and trend enhancements
- Tilt derivative
- Pseudo-gravity
- 2D profile modelling
- 2D and 3D inversion (e.g. for basement structure)
- Extended Euler deconvolution (2D and 3D)
- Spectral analysis
- Dip-azimuth visualisation
- Structural lineament analysis and characterisation
Interpretation
Interpretation of gravity and magnetic data to help understand geological structures requires that all available geological ‘control’ data are incorporated in the work programme. These include seismic data, geological maps and well logs. A phase of qualitative interpretation is generally followed by quantitative 2D profile modelling (and perhaps 3D inversion), and estimations of depths to magnetic sources.

Selected Interpretation Studies
Selected Interpretation Studies undertaken for oil companies over the past 10 years that have incorporated gravity and magnetic data, supported where available by seismic and well data, to further understand the structural development and sedimentary basin definition of a region.
