Modern Uses of Gravity and Magnetic Data in Oil Exploration

Rationale

The course will review the roles that land, marine, airborne and satellite gravity and magnetic methods play in oil exploration. It will focus on the application of modern technology as applied to gravity and magnetic surveys as a cost-effective exploration method to enhance, delineate and help constrain seismically based models of the subsurface.

Objectives

  • To review advances in data acquisition and processing technology
  • Reduction to the pole or equator
  • To address and review the issues of quality control in data acquisition and processing
  • To consider aspects of good survey design
  • To present the principles, with examples, of qualitative and quantitative interpretation methods

Who Will Benefit

The 3-day course is designed for oil industry geoscientists who need refreshing in the uses that gravity and magnetics data can play in their exploration programmes. The length of the course and its content can tailored to suit client requirements.

Programme

The programme will be a series of interactive seminars and practical ‘hands on’ map and computer based demonstrations/exercises addressing the following topics:

  • What’s new and what can we achieve today?
  • Role of gravity and magnetics in oil exploration
  • Critical evaluation of gravity and magnetic data acquisition and technological advances
  • Survey design - tailoring for specific targets
  • Data processing for digital products for today’s requirements
  • Quality control in acquisition and processing
  • Visualisation - art and science
  • Derived products and quick-look interpretation
  • Semi-automated methods - the missing link?
  • The appropriate use of modelling in quantitative interpretation
  • Integration with existing geological and seismic data

ArcGIS for Geoscientists

Rationale

With the industry now standardising on ArcGIS software for their exploration databases and projects, GETECH is pleased to offer multi-day courses to specifically give practising geoscientists the skills to build, manipulate and query ArcGIS projects.

Objectives

The course consists of formal presentations and interactive exercises based on ESRI's standard training courses, but tailored specifically for geoscientists. Each participant will receive a hard copy version of the course notes and the digital data used in the exercises.

GETECH geophysicists and geologists have been using ArcView and ArcGIS software for over nine years and the instructor will bring such experience to both formal and informal tuition during the course.

Participants will require no prior experience of the software but will leave with the confidence to effectively and efficiently use, and contribute to, the ArcGIS projects within their company's exploration programme.

Who Will Benefit

The two day course is more suited to exploration team members who need refreshing and updating while the 4 day course is designed to provide a more in depth study with greater interactive practical examples.

Programme

The programme will be a series of interactive seminars and practical ‘hands on’ computer based demonstrations/exercises addressing the following topics:

  • Setting Up a GIS Project
  • Working with Spatial data
  • Displaying geological and geophysical data
  • Querying the Database
  • Creating and manipulating Tables
  • Geo-referencing and spatial adjustment
  • Hot linking seismic image profiles
  • Creating Shapefiles
  • Visualising raster images
  • Working with layers and map symbology
  • Modifying the ArcGIS interface
  • Entering metadata descriptions
  • Geo-processing
  • Creating maps
  • Where to access geoscience datasets
  • Extensions and scripts
  • Free software downloads
